Jones is a child born to a motherless family and had five children living suffering from poverty and hardships as a child, had an extremely difficult early life. Her mother lived on the road and even inside the basement of a church in the area at times. Jones was forced to move to another school every during her high school years because of this nomadic existence. Jones was kept apart from her family during Theodore Roosevelt to pursue athletics in track and field. Jones stayed in four residences during her high school years in order to study in a single location.
